Meet The Artist Behind our London Bridge Shack

We recently opened our London Bridge Shack, where a bespoke collection of artwork by illustrator Tess Smith-Roberts brings some of the area’s best-known landmarks into the space.

Inspired by London Bridge station, the River Thames and Borough Market, the artwork captures the neighbourhood through Tess’s bright and playful style.

We caught up with Tess to learn more about her background, the inspiration behind the pieces and why food features so heavily in her work.

Meet Tess Smith-Roberts.

SS: First things first, tell us about yourself.

TSR: My name is Tess and I’m an illustrator from the UK, currently based in Tokyo.

SS: What’s your background in art? How did you get started?

TSR: I studied illustration at Kingston School of Art. So I’ve been drawing since before then really, and I’ve been freelance since I graduated, about seven years now I think! I feel so lucky that I get to draw every day for my job, it’s crazy.

SS: How would you describe your artistic style?

TSR: Bright, colourful and silly!

SS: What was your first reaction when Shake Shack reached out?

TSR: I was sooooo so happy! But also just couldn’t believe it. I love Shake Shack, always been such a fan. And I love burgers. My dream collab to be honest! I don’t think anything can top this.

SS: What’s the story behind the artwork you created for London Bridge?

TSR: It was based on three distinct areas in London Bridge: the station, the River Thames and Borough Market.

SS: How do you hope people feel when they see your art?

TSR: Happy!

SS: Food and art, do they go hand in hand for you?

TSR: Yes. Completely. I don’t think they can exist without each other. I love drawing food. I don’t really draw anything but food, it’s the main thing I draw actually.

I also love snacking whilst working. So yes, they totally go hand in hand.

SS: Do you have any hobbies beside art?

TSR: Cooking! I loveee cooking pasta for my friends. Recently started knitting too, but I’m not very good… it’s taken me sooo long to make one skinny scarf :’)

SS: What’s coming up next for you?

TSR: I just got my visa extended so I will stay in Tokyo for another year! Hopefully more exhibitions and pop-ups in Asia are on the cards : )

SS: Finally, what’s your favourite Shake Shack burger combination? Any hacks you want to share?

TSR: My fave is the classic ShackBurger!! Always with fries, Diet Coke and lots of ketchup. So much ketchup actually, I always dip my burger into the little ketchup pot.

A huge thank you to Tess for bringing her take on London Bridge to life in the Shack.

Next time you’re in, take a look around and see how many local references you can spot.
