Our Commitment to Sustainability

At Shake Shack, we care deeply about the planet.

That’s why we’re rolling up our sleeves and making sustainability a key part of everything we do.

From reducing waste to supporting ethical farming, we’re taking real steps to shrink our footprint and make a positive impact.

As part of the growing movement of sustainable restaurants, we’re proud to lead by example.

Here’s how we’re doing it.

Ethical Sourcing and Animal Welfare: Raising the Bar

We care about the quality of our ingredients and the welfare of the animals that produce them. Choosing these responsibly sourced ingredients means better taste and a kinder footprint.

  • Chicken: Our chicken is free from antibiotics and animal byproducts, raised cage-free and humanely. We’re committed to meeting the European Chicken Commitment by 2026, which improves living conditions, reducing stocking density and adopting slower-growing breeds. All our chicken is Red Tractor approved.
  • Beef: Our beef is 100% Angus Aberdeen from cattle raised on grass, without hormones or antibiotics.
  • Eggs: All eggs in our UK supply chain come from cage-free systems.

Better Buns. Better for the Planet.

At Shake Shack, we’re committed to sourcing ingredients that are better for people and the planet. That’s why we’ve introduced Wildfarmed flour into our buns across all UK Shacks – the same great taste, now with a smaller environmental footprint.

Who is Wildfarmed?
Wildfarmed works with UK farmers to grow wheat using regenerative agriculture, a soil-friendly approach that avoids heavy chemicals, supports biodiversity, and protects the land for future generations.

Why it matters:
Conventional farming damages soil health and ecosystems. Wildfarmed offers a better way, producing delicious, high-quality wheat while improving the environment.

The result?
Soft, tasty Shack buns made with Wildfarmed wheat – no compromise on flavour, but a big win for nature.

Small change. Big impact.

Looking to the Future: Our Jersey Dairy Partnership

At Shake Shack, our commitment to sustainability is an ongoing journey. From September 2025, we are excited to partner with Jersey Dairy as our new frozen custard supplier, a move that strengthens our dedication to environmentally responsible sourcing.

Jersey Dairy is a leader in sustainable dairy production, certified by LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) and Red Tractor. They uphold high standards in soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare, ensuring that every step of their process supports a healthier environment.

Central to Jersey Dairy’s approach is the Jersey cow, a heritage breed known for its rich, creamy milk with higher butterfat and protein content. This breed requires less processing and yields more with less input, making it naturally more efficient and having a lower environmental footprint than other breeds.

By choosing Jersey Dairy, we not only support local agriculture but also embrace farming practices that prioritise sustainability and animal welfare.

Sustainable Packaging: 100% Recyclable Materials

We’re committed to reducing environmental impact through responsible packaging choices. All our to-go bags, boxes, and containers are made from 100% recyclable materials, designed to be easily processed and re-used, helping to minimise waste.

We work closely with partners who share our sustainability values to continuously improve our packaging and reduce its footprint. When you enjoy a meal at Shake Shack, you can trust that our packaging reflects our ongoing efforts to support a more sustainable future.

Building with Purpose: Reclaimed Materials in Our Shacks

We love giving old materials new life. That’s why some of our Shacks include reclaimed wood and other materials, like the Stratford Shack, where wood from old bowling alleys finds a second home.

It’s one small way we’re reducing waste and adding a little story to the spaces you love.

Giving Wine Bottles New Life

Packaging waste is a big deal, and we’re tackling it head-on. That’s why we’ve partnered with Sustainable Wine Solutions, leaders in circular economy practices for wine.

Their clever Bottle Return Scheme means every wine bottle can be reused up to 30 times, slashing its carbon footprint by up to 95% compared to single-use bottles. In 2023 alone, this scheme saved over 140 tonnes of glass from landfill and cut more than 22,000 kg of CO₂ emissions.

By choosing reusable bottles, Shake Shack is helping to reduce packaging waste and support a more sustainable wine industry, reinforcing our commitment to Shake Shack sustainability at every level of the guest experience.

Supporting Local Communities and Charities

We’re committed to making a positive difference in the communities where we operate. Each Shack donates 5% of sales from our dessert menu to local charities, helping to support causes that matter most to our neighbours. Whether it’s providing vital services, supporting education, or championing environmental projects, these donations allow us to contribute directly to the wellbeing of our local communities.

Beyond financial support, our teams actively engage with local organisations through fundraising events, building strong connections and a shared sense of purpose. We believe that by working together with community partners, we can create lasting impact, proving that good food and good deeds go hand in hand.

Turning Used Cooking Oil into Clean Energy

We’re proud to partner with Olleco, the UK’s leading resource recovery business for organic waste.

Olleco helps us close the loop on sustainability by transforming our used cooking oil into clean, renewable energy – cutting down on waste and carbon emissions.

Here’s how Olleco works their magic:

  • Used Cooking Oil Collection: Olleco collects used cooking oil from Shake Shack locations and a further 50,000+ food sites across the UK.
  • Biodiesel Production: The oil is converted into high-quality biodiesel, which can reduce carbon emissions by up to 90% compared to traditional fossil diesel.
  • Advanced Biorefinery Facilities: Their purpose-built plants ensure the used oil is processed efficiently and sustainably, maintaining a closed-loop system that minimises waste.

When you enjoy your meal, you’re also supporting a smarter, cleaner way to power the future.

Our Commitment, Our Future

Sustainability at Shake Shack is about doing the right thing every day, from the ingredients we choose to the way we power our kitchens and support our communities. We’re proud of the steps we’ve taken so far, but we know the journey never ends. With trusted partners and a clear focus on reducing our impact, we’re excited to keep pushing forward, serving great food that’s better for people and the planet.

If you’re looking for sustainable restaurants in London and across the UK, our Shacks across the country reflect the same values, from eco-friendly packaging to ethical sourcing and community support, making it easier to enjoy great food with a lighter footprint.
