We recently opened our Manchester Shack, and at the heart of it is bespoke internal artwork by Jessica Lee, a piece that brings playful energy that feels distinctly Manchester.
We caught up with Jessica to talk about her background, the story behind this piece, and how her love for food influences her art style.
Meet Jessica Lee
Q1: First things first, tell us about yourself
A1: Hi, I’m Jessica Lee and I’m an illustrator based in Manchester.
Q2: What’s your background in art? How did you get started?
A2: I’ve always been creative ever since I was little. Fast forward to uni, I studied Graphic Design at Manchester School of Art, and after I graduated, I went straight into freelance illustration.
Q3: How would you describe your artistic style?
A3: I’d say it’s very minimal, but fun and joyful.
Q4: What was your reaction when Shake Shack reached out?
A4: I was really excited because it’s the first Shake Shack up north, and it’s an honour to be a part of it.
Q5: What’s the story behind the artwork at King’s Cross?
A5: The concept behind the art at this Shake Shack is based on Manchester’s music culture and I really wanted to highlight that, so all the characters are seen dancing and moving and grooving. They’ve got their little bucket hats on and are interacting with the Shake Shack items.
Q6: How do you hope people feel when they see your art?
A6: I hope they feel happy and joy.
Q7: Food and art – do they go hand in hand?
A7: I draw a lot of illustrations that’s based on my interests and personal experiences. I’m a big foodie, so when I try foods that I really like, I’ll go and draw them or turn them into characters.
Q8: Any hobbies outside of art?
A8: I have a lot of creative hobbies, but outside of that, I enjoy playing games on my Switch. At the moment, I’m loving Pokopia which is the new Pokémon game.
Q9: And finally… what’s your Shake Shack order?
A9: I’ve just tried the Shack Stack which was really good, and this isn’t really a hack, but I really like dipping fries into milkshakes.
